Perfect match for my Maggies LRS+ not a lot of info out there on this combo, so decided to take the plunge and see how it adds up. Currently have a Jolida Fusion tube preamp connected via xlr inputs and I hear nothing but dead silence out of the amp at idle and at full volume with nothing playing. The amp barely gets warm. Makes the LRS+ sound phenomenal. I have around 50 hours so far on the break in process, but if this is any indication of the sound now, and will get better as time goes on, this would be a sleeper of a system for 3 grand. I am happy with the purchase.

I have been an Adcom fan for over twenty-five years and never been dissapointed. I have the GFA 555, GFA 555 II, GFA 5802, GFA 585SE, and two GFA 565SE’s. All of the equipment is FANTASTIC. Adcom rocks!

L’Adcom GFA 555 è stato l’archetipo di una nuova era di amplificatori ad alta potenza ed ad alta corrente, corso inaugurato dal suo progettista Nelson Pass. Tale amplificatore fa parte dei mostri sacri dell’alta fedeltà oramai da trentacinque anni e ha visto quasi contemporaneamente nel tempo affacciarsi alla ribalta altri costruttori, quali ad esempio Bryston e krell, giusto per citare due nomi noti.
Cosa ha di particolare tale amplificatore così dimesso nell’aspetto? Innanzitutto chiariamo che è un amplificatore finale di potenza stereo e quindi necessita di un preamplificatore da frapporre tra lui e la sorgente sonora. Si ha un aspetto dimesso ma nasconde un rapporto qualità/prezzo elevatissimo.
E dotato di un basso superbo con una gamma media e alta significativa ma quasi scevra da alcunché di colorazione.
Nel 555 non c’è nessuna durezza o perdita di dettaglio, tipica di amplificatori a stato solido ad alta potenza, e può essere considerato un giusto concorrente del Krell, con la sua capacità di rendere le quattro ottave superiori brillanti e dettagliate.
Dotato come i migliori valvolari di una resa realistica e stabile dell’immagine, è un amplificatore capace di restituire dolcezza e dettaglio anche quando è sollecitato per erogare potenze superiori ai 200 watt per canale, nominali a 8 ohm.
Al superamento della potenza massima, allorché la distorsione supera il valore dell’1% si accendono i led di sovraccarico presenti sul pannello.
I valori che caratterizzano quest’amplificatore sono i seguenti:

Potenza per collegamento a ponte: 760 watt a 8 Ohm 900 a 4 Ohm.
L’amplificatore è dotato di un commutatore per il passaggio da stereo al funzionamento mono a ponte. Lo stadio di uscita di ciascun canale ha 8 transistor capaci di erogare più di 20 ampere anche nelle condizioni di carico più gravose.
Il suo costo nel 1985 era di appena un milione e mezzo di lire e vista la qualità e la disponibilità di essere pilotato a ponte, ha invogliato molti di noi audiofili, a dotarsi di una coppia di questi amplificatori in modo tale da poter usufruire di una potenza di oltre 700 watt per canale.
Il funzionamento a sostenuta potenza può portare ad una temperatura sui dissipatori superiore a 75°. In tal caso un circuito termico d’interruzione spegne l’amplificatore, ripristinando il funzionamento all’abbassarsi della temperatura.
A onor del vero in 34 anni di funzionamento non sono mia riuscito a portare i miei due GFA 555 a sovraccarichi di potenza, neanche nei periodi estivi più caldi e i led indicanti l’incipit di una distorsione non si sono mai accesi
Aprendo un GFA 555 si rimane meravigliati dal grosso toroidale al centro dello chassis e dai grossi elettrolitici di oltre 60.000 microfarad con 100 volt di isolamento.
La qualità della componentistica è fatta per durare quasi in eterno e i cablaggi a vista fatti a mano da personale che sapeva il fatto suo. Oggi Chi ce l’ha se lo tiene stretto, anche perché oggi un amplificatore con tali caratteristiche non costa meno di sei, settemila euro.
